Sri Lanka tourist scams: four traps to recognise

Most trips are not defined by scams. Still, a few recurring patterns cost travelers money because they look helpful at first.

1. Visa helpers

Use the official online ETA route and do not pay a tout to complete a simple application. Check entry requirements again close to travel because rules can change.

2. Resold train tickets

Scarce seats can attract a black market. ID checks may make a resold ticket useless, even before the markup. Use official channels and keep the booking details that match your passport.

3. Gem and spice-garden detours

A friendly recommendation may carry a commission and lead to a hard sell. You do not owe a purchase. If the stop was not part of your plan, ask to continue to your original destination.

4. Unclear tuk-tuk prices

Confirm the fare before moving or use the meter where available, especially in Colombo. If the explanation keeps changing, step away and find another ride.

The practical defence is simple: slow the interaction down. Ask who benefits, verify the official channel and be willing to walk away without explaining yourself.
